Securing scarce specialist marketing talent in just five weeks

A market-leading home safety business, based in Telford, needed specialist marketing capability to support brand growth and campaign delivery. Faced with a restricted local talent pool and an onsite requirement, we reshaped the search and engaged passive candidates, enabling the client to make a confident appointment after just one interview stage.

The requirement

The role required more than technical marketing expertise: the successful candidate also needed commercial awareness and the confidence to collaborate closely with colleagues on site.

It soon became clear that the organisation’s location and onsite working requirement meant early sourcing generated limited suitable interest, in a market where high-calibre marketing professionals were often considering several opportunities at once.

The market challenge

The priority was therefore to secure the right capability quickly without lowering the bar on expertise or organisational fit. The initial market response made clear that a conventional applicant-led search would be unlikely to deliver.

Rather than continue with an approach that was gaining limited traction, we used candidate feedback to diagnose the barriers to interest. It became clear the search needed to reach beyond active applicants, present the opportunity more compellingly and engage professionals who could see the value of working closely with the wider team on site.

The strategic response

We repositioned the employer proposition around the scope of the role, the organisation’s strengths and the benefits of onsite collaboration. The search was widened through additional sourcing tools, enabling direct access to passive professionals who had not been reached through traditional channels.

The emphasis shifted from application volume to decision quality. A focused group of prospects was assessed against the client’s requirements, motivations and working preferences before introduction. When a standout candidate emerged, Seymour John supported a fast, well-coordinated interview and feedback process so the client could act decisively.

The outcome

The role was filled within five weeks. The refreshed search opened a new candidate pipeline and identified an exceptional prospect. After the first interview stage, the client had sufficient confidence to make an offer and conclude the remaining interview process.

The appointment delivered the specialist marketing capability the organisation needed despite the restricted market and the limited traction of the initial search.

The business impact

The client secured the expertise required to support brand and campaign delivery while reducing management time spent on interviews and avoiding unnecessary additional stages. Just as importantly, the search demonstrated that location and onsite requirement need not become barriers to appointment when the market is understood, the proposition is positioned effectively, and the process is adapted accordingly.

What made the difference

  • Using live market feedback to identify why the original search was underperforming
  • Reframing the opportunity around the role’s scope, the employer proposition and the value of onsite collaboration
  • Extending the search beyond active applicants to engage relevant passive talent
  • Prioritising a tightly qualified shortlist over application volume
  • Maintaining momentum so the client could act quickly once the right candidate was identified
